Yachting is a hidden gem—a global career that many people in Canada aren’t even aware exists. Despite the incredible opportunities it offers, the path to entering this industry remains unclear for many. That’s why we created Next Wave Crew.

Founded by Canadians who are currently working in the yachting industry, NWC was built to make this career path accessible. We understand the challenges and confusion that come with trying to break into yachting, especially from Canada. Our mission is to guide you through every step, providing the practical information and support you need to confidently embark on this exciting journey. About the Founder

After earning my bachelor’s degree from Simon Fraser University in 2017, I was at a crossroads between pursuing a master’s degree and wanting to explore the world beyond Canada while still earning a living. That’s when I stumbled upon the yachting industry. With little online information, especially for Canadians, I decided to take a leap of faith. After saving money from various restaurant jobs, I travelled to the UK for a course I knew little about, then ventured solo to the South of France to attempt to land a job. 

Despite having almost no knowledge about the industry and uncertainty about its legitimacy as a career, it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I joined the industry at 24 years old and my only regret is not starting sooner. Over the years, I’ve had the chance to work on superyachts ranging from 40m to 160m, both private and charter; in addition to several new builds. Yachting has also led to opportunities beyond the sea, such as working as a travelling assistant for a private family across several estates in America.

As of today, there remains a lack of information in Canada for Canadians interested in yachting. My goal is to challenge your assumptions, increase your awareness of new career options, and bridge that gap. I aim to help you use this dynamic industry as a tool to build the life you’ve always dreamed of. Yachting is challenging, but it is full of unexpected opportunities. Generally, entry-level positions require basic maritime certifications such as STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping). ENG1 medical certification, and relevant experience in hospitality, maritime or related fields.

While prior experience in hospitality, customer service, or maritime fields can be beneficial, it is not always necessary. Many entry-level positions are available for individuals with the right attitude, willingness to learn, and a strong work ethic.

Job opportunities can be found through various channels, including crew agencies, online job boards, networking events and personal referrals. It is essential to create a professional resume, prepare for interviews, and actively network within the industry to increase your chances of securing a position.

Salaries for superyacht crew members vary depending on the factors such as position, experience, yacht size, and owner preferences. Entry-level positions such as deckhand or stewardess, may start at around 2500 –   3000 ($3600 – $4500 CAD), in addition to potential tips and bonuses. Experienced crew members in senior positions or with specialized skills can earn significantly more.

The minimum age is 18 years old. The industry values skills, attitude and adaptability. Many individuals enter the industry in their 20s, but experienced crew members can find opportunities at various stages of their careers. Health, fitness, and a positive attitude are often more crucial than age.

Working as superyacht crew can be both rewarding and challenging. Crew members often enjoy the opportunity to travel to exotic destinations, meet interesting people and work in a dynamic environment. However, it requires long hours dedication and the ability to adapt to ever changing circumstances. Additionally, crewmembers must adhere to strict safety protocols, maintain high standards of professionalism and work collaboratively as part of a team.
